Update: (2:44AM) Seems that all the old IPNs have finally came in and we've shipped them out. PayPal has not addressed the issue itself to my knowledge but most of us who were having problems have seen the problem fix itself so perhaps PayPal didn't take as long as normal this time ....
Update: PayPal seems to be working on the issue. We're recieving some IPNs now. The way IPN works is that the previous orders placed between 4PM CST and 8PM CST will be resent to our system at some random time (it's more or less random with PayPal) and then we'll see them properly. We have recieved 3 IPNs in the last 30 minutes so I guess they have fixed it, or atleast it appears that way.
We've noticed over the last 2 days the PayPal IPN (Instant PayPal Notification), basically when PayPal tells our site someone made payments and the info we need to process it, has been failing and/or lagged completly. I didn't think much of it because I've been updating so much code I figured perhaps the processing script got a parse error during library updates or perhaps Adam was updating some code too. However, we've recieved a few complaints of users with aged accounts getting "unpaid" status even though they've not altered anything.
I've jumped over to the PayPal Developer forum and browsed their IPN forum and noticed a bit of users since 2/26/2008 complaining of no or many failed IPNs. That fits in to our situation too, only, more like we're not getting fails here and there anymore just completly nothing. I'm currently replying to and monitoring this thread which is the most recent and active; http://www.pdncommunity.com/pdn/board/message?board.id=ipn&message.id=3313 --- since I'm a regular contributor and helper on the IPN forum of PayPal perhaps they'll look in to this if they haven't yet since it's not often contributor complain about the IPN/API/Sandbox being down.
Due to the extensive processing that goes on with each transaction, and the fact only one staff member has physical access to the PayPal account and we're not even recieving *any* reciepts we're unable to process orders until this is fixed. Our systems are extremly automated and rely on the IPN system.
PayPal as usual reports no problems on their status forum but I doubt a lot of users are simply getting random errors, ecspecially in our case where we process thousands of transactions a month and I've not altered the processing code since December 05 or so. I'm watching a few threads on their forum awaiting some kind of anwser or ETA on when they'll fix this but if none of the PayPal support team replies in the next hour or so I'll give them a call.
Currently I'm unsure if it's just a small number of people effected or not (I don't see how it's not everyone who uses IPN though) so I'd imagine they're already checking it out.
I'll edit/update this news post as I get more information. |
